I am immensely indebted to my family, teachers, colleagues, students and friends. The intellectual flame that is theoretical physics is kept alive by a community of remarkable people in continuous dialogue. This dialogue includes the impassioned dedication of beginning graduate students and also the distilled wisdom of the more senior leaders of the field. It includes science teachers in schools, science writers and the curiosity of the broader public. It is my privilege to have had the chance, for some years now, to live and breathe within this community. It is a privilege to have spent so much of my time in conversation with exceptional people, turning thoughts over and over, looking for mistaken hidden assumptions and for unexpected ways forward.
